Attenuators

An RF Attenuator is a passive network designed to reduce the power of a signal by a specific amount (measured in Decibels, or dB) without significantly distorting its waveform. They act as the “volume control” for high-frequency signals, protecting sensitive equipment from being overwhelmed or damaged by high power levels.

Why Choose an Attenuator?

Equipment Protection: They prevent high-power sources (like amplifiers) from "blowing out" the sensitive input stages of spectrum analysers or oscilloscopes by dropping the signal to a safe level.
Impedance Matching: Attenuators improve the "Source Match" between two devices. By placing an attenuator between a source and a load, you reduce the impact of reflections (VSWR), leading to more accurate measurements.
Range Extension: They allow you to measure signals that would otherwise be "off the scale" of your instrument, effectively extending the dynamic range of your existing test gear.
Signal Leveling: In complex test benches, attenuators are used to balance different signal paths, ensuring that every component in the system receives the precise power level required for stable operation.

Core Applications

Transmitter Testing: Reducing the high-wattage output of a radio transmitter or cellular base station so it can be safely analysed by a low-power desktop instrument.
Receiver Sensitivity Testing: Using a high-value attenuator (e.g., 60dB or 100dB) to "shrink" a standard signal generator's output down to the tiny microvolt levels needed to test a radio receiver's limits.
Intermodulation Distortion (IMD) Measurement: Providing isolation between two signal generators to prevent them from "talking" to each other, which would create false interference products during testing.
Production Line Calibration: Ensuring that automated test systems provide repeatable results by using "Step Attenuators" to simulate different signal strengths and distances for wireless devices.
