Function Generators

A function generator is a versatile signal source that injects controlled electrical waveforms into a device under test. While an oscilloscope sees the signal, the function generator creates it, allowing engineers to simulate various inputs and see how a circuit reacts.

Why Choose a Function Generator?

Precise Waveform Control: Unlike a simple power supply, these units can produce a variety of periodic waveforms—such as sine, square, triangle, and sawtooth—with digital precision over frequency and amplitude.

Arbitrary Waveform Generation (AWG): Many modern digital models allow you to "draw" or upload custom, complex waveforms to simulate real-world sensor data or erratic signals that a standard sine wave cannot replicate.

Modulation Capabilities: They can apply AM (Amplitude), FM (Frequency), or PM (Phase) modulation to a signal, which is essential for testing communication equipment and radio receivers.

Frequency Sweeping: Most units can automatically "sweep" through a range of frequencies, which is vital for characterising the frequency response of filters, amplifiers, and speakers.
