Comb Generators

An EMC Comb Generator is a signal source that produces a series of narrow spectral spikes (resembling the teeth of a comb) at precise, regular frequency intervals. It is primarily used as a reference source to validate and calibrate EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) test setups.

Why Use a Comb Generator?

System Verification: Before starting an expensive compliance test, a comb generator allows you to check that your spectrum analyser, cables, and antennas are all working correctly. If the "teeth" don't appear at the expected levels, you know there is a fault in your measurement chain.

Normalization of Test Environments: It helps compare different test sites (e.g., an Open Area Test Site vs. an Anechoic Chamber) by providing a stable, known emission source that can be moved between them.

Cable and Filter Characterisation: By injecting a comb signal through a cable or filter, you can instantly see the frequency response across a wide range without needing to manually sweep a signal generator.

Quick "Go/No-Go" Checks: It provides a fast way to verify that your pre-compliance setup is still "in-tune" and hasn't drifted since its last formal calibration.

Core Applications

Radiated Emissions Testing: Battery-powered, portable comb generators (like the Tekbox TBCG1) are placed inside a test chamber to act as a "standard emitter" to check antenna and receiver performance from 100MHz up to 6GHz.

Conducted Emissions Reference: Some models (like the TBCG3-CN) are designed to be plugged directly into a LISN (Line Impedance Stabilisation Network) to verify that conducted noise measurements are accurate.

Shielding Effectiveness: By placing a comb generator inside a shielded enclosure or "taped" box, you can measure how much signal "leaks" out, helping to identify gaps or weak points in EMI shielding.

Frequency Multiplier: Passive comb generators (like the TBCG2) can take a lower-frequency input and "multiply" it into the GHz range, creating a broad reference signal for general laboratory use.
