Amplifiers

An EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) Amplifier is a specialised broadband power amplifier designed to increase the strength of RF signals for immunity testing. Unlike standard audio or narrow-band wireless amplifiers, EMC amplifiers must maintain high linearity and stability across an extremely wide range of frequencies (e.g., from 150 kHz up to 3 GHz or higher).

Why Choose an Amplifier?

Broadband Performance: They are designed to cover multiple octaves in a single band, allowing for continuous frequency sweeps during testing without having to switch equipment.

High VSWR Tolerance: EMC testing often involves driving "mismatched" loads (like antennas in a shielded room or injection probes). These amplifiers are built to be "rugged," meaning they won't shut down or sustain damage when power is reflected back from the load.

Linear Gain: To ensure that the test signal remains "clean" and doesn't develop unwanted harmonics, these amplifiers provide a very flat and linear power output across their entire operating range.

Class A Operation: Most high-quality EMC amplifiers operate in "Class A," which provides the best signal purity and the most reliable performance when the load impedance is unpredictable.

Core Applications

Radiated Immunity Testing (IEC 61000-4-3): Used to drive an antenna (such as a Log-Periodic or Horn antenna) to create a high-strength electromagnetic field. This "bathes" the Device Under Test (DUT) in RF energy to see if it malfunctions.

Conducted Immunity Testing (IEC 61000-4-6): The amplifier provides the power needed for a Bulk Current Injection (BCI) probe or a Coupling Decoupling Network (CDN) to "inject" interference directly into the power or data cables of a product.

Component Characterisation: Used in research and development to amplify low-level signals from a tracking generator or signal generator to a level where the non-linear behavior of filters, attenuators, or sensors can be observed.

General Purpose RF Laboratory Work: Anywhere a "boost" is needed for a signal source to drive a specific transducer or experimental setup.
