Build Your Own Conducted Emissions Test Bench — with Dr Min Zhang

Posted on: August 21st, 2025 by Kane Brady

Passing EMC first time saves time, money, and stress. In this hands-on walkthrough, Dr Min Zhang (Mach One Design EMC) shows how to set up a conducted emissions bench that delivers results comparable to accredited labs — ideal for catching issues early in R&D.

What you’ll learn

  • How to assemble a test ground plane — vertical + horizontal surfaces with secure, low-impedance joins.
  • Correct grounding and placement of a LISN (Line Impedance Stabilisation Network).
  • Ideal setup for DUT placement: 0.8 m table height, 0.4 m from vertical plane, and 1 m mains lead with controlled length hanging.
  • How to configure a spectrum analyser for 150 kHz–30 MHz using a 9 kHz EMI resolution bandwidth.
  • Avoiding missed or inaccurate measurements using sweep vs. segment-style software, or dedicated EMI receivers.
  • Separating common-mode vs. differential-mode noise using a LISN Mate for targeted EMC debugging.
Safety & best practice: Earth the LISN casing, add an isolation transformer to prevent RCD trips — always terminate the unused LISN port with 50 Ω; use a transient limiter and compensate its insertion loss.

Roll-Up Ground Plane

Quick to assemble, safe to handle, and provides good electrical contact—no sharp edges, just rolls and fastens.
